The international Cobra movement sparked a revolution in modern art shortly after World War II. Museum Cobra is the leading museum dedicated to this legendary movement.
Cobra artists sought to create free art in a bold, colorful, and imaginative style. They experimented with new techniques and materials, exploring fresh avenues for post-war European art. During the brief existence of the movement (1948-1951), they produced a remarkable volume of influential works.
Museum Cobra in Amstelveen houses one of the world's most important Cobra collections, featuring masterpieces by artists such as Karel Appel, Corneille, Asger Jorn, and Lucebert. These artworks, along with historical photographs and other period documents, are showcased in rotating exhibitions. The museum also keeps the spirit of Cobra alive through its ever-changing exhibitions.
Museum JAN – formerly known as Museum Jan van der Togt – is a museum for visual arts, particularly recognized for its unique collection of glass art.
The foundation of the collection was assembled by industrialist Jan van der Togt, who was the founder of the company Tomado and a passionate collector of glass and contemporary art. To make his collection accessible to the public, he established the Museum Jan van der Togt in collaboration with artist Jan Verschoor. In January 2020, the museum was renamed Museum JAN.
Located in a modern building in the Old Village, Museum JAN showcases works by artists such as Ossip Zadkine, Floris Meydam, Andries Copier, Corneille, and Sam Francis. The museum continues to expand its collection, still focusing heavily on modern sculptural glass. In addition to the permanent collection, Museum JAN regularly organizes groundbreaking exhibitions featuring contemporary.
